Trauma can leave deep marks on the mind and body, often hidden beneath conscious awareness. Traditional talk therapy sometimes struggles to reach these hidden layers. Sandtray Therapy offers a unique way to access and heal trauma by engaging the senses and imagination. While many associate sandtray therapy with children, adults also benefit greatly from this approach. This post explores why sandtray therapy is effective for trauma healing in adults, how it differs from sand play therapy, and the known benefits it offers.

What Is Sandtray Therapy?

Sandtray therapy involves using a shallow tray filled with sand and a collection of miniature figures, objects, and natural elements. Clients create scenes or stories in the sand, expressing thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to verbalize. The therapist observes and supports the process, helping the client explore the symbolic meanings of their creations.

This therapy taps into the brain’s natural ability to communicate through imagery and metaphor. It allows people to externalize internal experiences in a tangible form. For adults dealing with trauma, this can be a powerful way to access implicit memories and emotions stored outside of conscious awareness.

How Sandtray Therapy Supports Trauma Healing in Adults

Trauma often disrupts the ability to process experiences verbally. Memories may be fragmented or stored as sensations and emotions rather than clear stories. Sandtray Therapy helps bypass these verbal barriers by engaging the senses and imagination.

Accessing Implicit Trauma

Implicit trauma refers to memories and feelings that are not easily recalled or described but influence behavior and emotional responses. Adults can use Sandtray Therapy to bring these hidden experiences into awareness. By creating scenes in the sand, they express what words cannot capture.

For example, a client might arrange miniatures representing feelings of isolation or danger without naming them. The therapist can gently guide exploration of these images, helping the client connect them to past experiences and current challenges.

It also helps clients access and process experiences that occurred during their preverbal childhood. We often forget that the brain does more than just organize information in logical and verbal thoughts. We also have instincts, emotions, and think in creative and symbolic ways. This part of the brain also needs to process trauma and to tell it's story. Sandtray Therapy allows this to happen and supports a client to also express experiences that they don't necessarily understand logically or feel so overwhelmed by that they can't talk about it directly. Sandtray is a beautiful way to make trauma work less overwhelming and mental health treatment more accessible to all ages.

Processing Difficult Emotions and Experiences

Sandtray Therapy provides a safe space to explore painful emotions like fear, anger, or grief. The physical act of shaping the sand and arranging figures offers a grounding experience. It allows clients to experiment with different perspectives and outcomes.

An adult survivor of trauma might create a scene showing a protective figure or a safe place, which can foster feelings of safety and control. This process supports emotional regulation and integration of traumatic memories.

Creating Resources During EMDR Treatment

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well-known trauma therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to process traumatic memories. Sandtray Therapy can complement EMDR by helping clients build internal resources before or during EMDR sessions.

For instance, clients can use the sandtray to create images of strength, resilience, or support. These images become mental anchors that clients can recall during distressing moments. This combination enhances the overall healing process and provides much needed support during processing.

Differences Between Sandtray Therapy and Sand Play Therapy

Though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, Sandtray Therapy and Sand Play therapy have distinct origins and approaches.

  • Sand Play Therapy was developed by Dora Kalff and is rooted in Jungian psychology. It emphasizes spontaneous, symbolic play without direct interpretation by the therapist. The therapist acts as a witness, allowing the client’s unconscious to express itself freely.

  • Sandtray Therapy is more structured and often integrated into various therapeutic models, including trauma-focused therapies. The therapist may take a more active role in guiding the process and interpreting the symbolic content to support healing goals.

In practice, Sandtray Therapy tends to be goal-oriented and used with clients of all ages, including adults. Sand play therapy is often more exploratory and associated with child therapy but can also be adapted for adults.

Known Benefits of Sandtray Therapy for Adults

Research and clinical experience highlight several benefits of Sandtray Therapy for adults, especially in trauma healing:

  • Nonverbal Expression

It allows clients to express complex feelings without relying on words, which can be difficult after trauma.

  • Titration

It allows clients the ability to distance themselves from difficult experiences and feelings. They can also represent things symbolically instead of in graphic details. This helps clients to process challenging material without getting overwhelmed.

  • Increased Self-Awareness

Creating and reflecting on sand scenes helps clients gain insight into their inner world and patterns.

  • Emotional Regulation

The tactile experience of handling sand and miniatures can calm the nervous system and reduce anxiety.

  • Empowerment and Control

Clients can experiment with changing scenes, symbolizing new ways to cope or resolve conflicts.

  • Integration of Traumatic Memories

Visual and sensory engagement supports the brain’s natural healing processes, helping to integrate fragmented memories.

  • Enhanced Therapeutic Relationship

The shared activity fosters trust and collaboration between client and therapist.

Practical Examples of Sandtray Therapy in Adult Trauma Treatment

  • A veteran struggling with PTSD might create a scene showing a battlefield alongside a peaceful home, helping to externalize conflicting emotions and work toward reconciliation.

  • An adult survivor of childhood abuse could use the Sandtray to represent different parts of themselves, such as the vulnerable child and the protective adult, facilitating internal dialogue and healing.

  • During EMDR, a client might build a sand scene representing a safe place, which they can visualize during distressing moments to maintain calm.

How to Find a Therapist Who Uses Sandtray Therapy

If you are interested in exploring Sandtray Therapy, look for licensed mental health professionals trained in this modality. Many therapists integrate Sandtray Therapy with other approaches like EMDR, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or mindfulness.

Ask about their experience working with your symptoms and/or diagnosis and ask how they use Sandtray Therapy in treatment. A good therapist will explain the process clearly and tailor it to your needs.
